Real Jewish Wedding Featured on The Wedding Yentas

By |2012-06-20T09:53:40-06:00June 20th, 2012|Featured|

So excited to be featured on the Jewish weddings blog, The Wedding Yentas!

******************************************

Rachel and David were married on August 6, 2011 at her family’s Santa Barbara estate. Their wedding was elegant, chic, and true to the bride and groom’s modern yet classic style. David wore a slim-fitting charcoal gray suit with black converse and a skinny black tie, and Rachel wore a strapless sweetheart dress that featured pewter-colored crystal beading detailing on bodice, a metallic pewter belt and a modern, tattered A-line skirt. The entire outdoor estate was utilized for the affair. The ceremony took place in a courtyard, cocktails and hor d’erves were enjoyed around the pool area in the back, and dinner was served along the long, green front lawn. Banquet tables lined the lawn with splashes of merlot and burgundy flowers atop, popping against the tranquil backdrop of the Santa Barbara landscape. Modern lanterns suspended from the huge chandelier tree hung over the dance floor as overhead string bulbs lit the blue evening sky. It was a great time with close friends, excellent food and wine, awesome music, and most of all, a bride and groom madly in love with one another.

Mazel tov, Rachel and David!

Exclusive: Style Me Pretty Shares Bridal Beauty Tips

11:30 AM, June 15 2012
Alison Syrett

Now that wedding season has started, one of our favorite bridal inspiration blogs, Style Me Pretty, is about to release a new edition of its digital magazine. The issue doesn’t go live until next Monday, June 18, but we got an exclusive sneak peek with this pretty snapshot and accompanying beauty tutorial. Here’s how to recreate the look for yourself:

1. Get smoldering, smoky eyes with Nars creme shadow in Lido or Lil Marlene. Apply all over the lid, up to the crease of the eye. Generously add Night Clubbing by Nars to the lid. Take a blending shadow blush such as Nars Shader Brush #3 and only smudge around the outside of the darkest color, blending the outline of the lid into the crease. Line your upper and lower water line (that’s the inside of the eye) with Waterproof Aqua Black gel liner by Make Up Forever. Finish it with thick fake lashes and a layer of your favorite mascara.

2. Soft cheeks are a must! Apply a pale peach blush such as Douceur by Nars, giving just a spot of color the the outside of the cheekbone. Add MAC Matte Bronzer to the hollow part of the cheek for a more defined look.

3. Lips should be nude! Try Giorgio Armani’s Plums or Beige lipstick and apply a soft, shimmery gloss like Sugar from Bobbi Brown.

From Rani Hoover of Rani Hoover Inspired Weddings & Events I am so pleased to share my inspiration for the villa shoot at The Sunstone Winery. I came across this amazing property while scouting for venues with a couple from LA and fell instantly in love. The property is a “green” property with in-floor heating, made from over than 80% reclaimed materials that were shipped over  from France and designed and built by the parents of the current owner. Nestled in the Sunstone Vineyard, which is an organic estate vineyard, and sitting atop a bluff overlooking the river valley in Santa Ynez, I couldn’t wait to plan a shoot using every inch of the property. This shoot became very special to many of the vendors contributing as we learned the history of the property, styled the shoot with amazing vintage heirloom pieces and planned every detail from the heart.

The inspiration: A two-story Italian Villa sits atop a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive trees with views to die for and all of the charm of a privately-owned estate. The couple elopes to their family estate and invites their closest family and friends to enjoy a glass of welcome sparkling wine with floating hibiscus and follow the ribboned flags to the wishing wall. Once there, the guests are asked to write a wish for the bride and groom and lace it in the wishing wall before joining them for an intimate and lavish dinner in front of the villa. After dinner, guests witness a sunset ceremony overlooking the valley under a standing oak tree lit by a field of lanterns. Post-ceremony fireside port, cigars, cake and truffles are waiting before they depart in classic style.

The details, design and style all reflect the feel of a couple who have pulled the most cherished items from their family home to create a lavish tablescape full of love and personal touches — a truly intimate ceremony full of lanterns, and candlelight and dessert by the fire, surrounded by loved ones. If the love is in the details, the beautiful sky-blue La Tavola linen feels like the bride pulled down a 14 foot drapery to dress the table, the hand painted place cards cling to the bone china Herand bowls and top the jars of freshly-jarred olives from the orchard. Even the scallop on the label mirrors the front door wood carving. The bride’s heirloom pieces of jewelry are her family’s treasured pieces made to feel as grand as the backdrop of the villa. I have also drawn inspiration for this shoot from a personal hand woven rug I’ve always loved and used it to anchor a 13-foot table lined with daylight candles. The flames of silk ribbon with touches of leather, wood, vintage furs, antique Christofle silver, heirloom Herend bone china (loaned from a friend) and to-die-for vintage Chanel and Vrba jewels. I love the elements of fire and air so these are present throughout, along with an air of mystery and surprise touches intended to inspire such as the welcome table and the wishing wall. Toss in beautiful classical guitar wafting through the villa and cap off the evening off with a vintage 1941 Cadillac appointed with silk ribbons and a floral medallion. Perfection!

San Ysidro Ranch Wedding by Jose Villa Photography + Joy de Vivre Part I

April 26th. 2012 by Abby Larson | Filed Under | 26 comments

I’m a girl’s girl. The kind that will always find comfort in the color pink. That will forever sigh when I see a bundle of peonies. The kind of girl’s girl that can spot a perfect Jose Villa photograph from a mile away. And whose fingers can’t ever find the right words to introduce one of his stunning weddings.  So imagine my nerdiness when you layer on a bride that is glowing from the inside out, a groom that is all dreaminess and a wedding style by Joy de Vivre and Florette Floral Designs that would make anyone swoon. Yeah, I know. Pure wedding bliss in full effect. We have Part II coming up next, but if you want to cheat (and we totally get it), you can check out the full gallery right here.

Click here for the FULL wedding!

From the Bride… I’ve always dreamed of a garden wedding. There is something so effortlessly romantic and beautiful about nature. We kept our wedding simple and tried to allow the beautiful surroundings at San Ysidro Ranch to stand out. With only 60 of our closest friends and family (plus our precious poodle, Molly), the day was intimate and special. We had the ceremony in a grassy lawn with two arches adorned with small white roses.  Dinner was served in a cozy cottage, warmly lit by the setting sun. The characteristic fireplace added a homey touch alongside the bookshelf of vintage books and vases. The long wooden tables we sat around came to life with gorgeous centerpieces arranged by the amazing Kelly from Florette Designs. She also arranged my unforgettable bouquet of peonies, dahlias, and jasmine vines, while my sweet bridesmaids each held single-stemmed blush peonies. We took a break and had a moment to ourselves in the lavender fields, just Jason and me, soaking in the remainder of the sun and all the beauty surrounding us. Our photographer, Jose, and our cinematographer, Joel, captured every precious moment and were the sweetest people to be around. There was so much love in the air, and to us, this was the most perfect day.

ORANGE YOU GLAD?

I’m a big believer in not always having to be so serious with your invitations. So if you’re thinking of having a little fun with your designs, you’ve come to the right place!

Still, you may wonder if it’s possible to take a playful idea and make it elegant. I’m here to reassure you that it is! Just look at the invitation suite we created for Elizabeth and Matthew, whose wedding was spun together by the fabulous event planner Jill La Fleur. The couple was getting married in Ojai, California, which is famous for its oranges. Given that the bride loves everything from the fruit’s scent to its color, we thought we would use the iconic citrus as inspiration and truly personalize the results. For a bit of fun, we riffed on the classic orange joke by adding the line “Orange You Glad You’re Invited” to the save-the-dates and incorporated the actual color into the more formal, flourish-filled invitations. See the whimsical but elegant results here.

We couldn’t resist continuing the playful mood in this week’s issue, so make sure to check out the orange-themed items in this week’s Get the Look. Plus, if you’re still jonesing for more bright color, take a look at Sephora’s fun new collection of beauty goodies, inspired by Pantone’s recently revealed “Color of the Year,” Tangerine Tango. Orange you glad you’re reading this issue?

PLAYFUL SAVE-THE-DATES & ELEGANT INVITATIONS
by
Invitation suites with personality are a sure way to get your guests’ attention and build excitement. Personally, I’m always thrilled when I get to work with a client who embraces being unique and loves to have a little fun with their designs. But can you be whimsical even if you’re planning a formal wedding? Of course!

My advice: do it with your save-the-dates. They’re the perfect opportunity to do something less formal; you can always follow with a more traditional invitation. Take, for example, what we did for Elizabeth & Matthew. To have some fun with their orange obsession, we played off the typical “Orange you glad?” jokes and put “Orange you glad you’re invited?” on the cover of their save-the-date booklet. When guests opened the envelope, they couldn’t help but smile. Each page followed with personal messages from the couple and all the details of their wedding weekend in Ojai, California, set against a backdrop of vintage orange crate labels! Even the cover was made of wood-grain embossed paper alluding to the wooden orange crates. Love these kinds of details!

The invitations that followed were made to look more elegant. Our team hand drew the couple’s names in flourished calligraphy and designed an intricate family crest that incorporated all their personal details. We kept the orange theme going through the ink color and playful little icons on the RSVP card. For the welcome note that guests received when they arrived at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, we brought back the vintage orange crate label theme and greeted guests with the line “Orange you glad you’re here?” to put them in a happy mood for the weekend.

EMBRACE COLOR: TANGERINE TANGO!
by
As a graphic designer, I consider Pantone’s inks an essential part of my design work. Every piece I create incorporates a Pantone (or PMS – Pantone Matching System) ink in it. So naturally when I saw that Pantone and Sephora were collaborating on a line of products inspired by Pantone’s “Color of the Year,” Tangerine Tango – and thereby combining my two loves, color and beauty – I was beyond excited. In keeping with our orange theme this week, I couldn’t resist sharing it with you. Just in time for spring and summer, I encourage you to check out these products. They’re all available on Sephora.com, and the price points make it easy to jump right in. I always love buying a bright new coral lip gloss for the season, and this year I’m definitely going to give one of the choices below a try. I’m thinking Tangerine Tango for my toes, too. Live life in color!

Ceci

PS: For those of you who want to bring this ink into your printed invitations, I recommend PANTONE 172U. Just tell your invitation designer and they will be really impressed you are speaking their language! Have fun!

Savvy Style Advice
Elizabeth Rauner Brewer

ELIZABETH RAUNER BREWER
Take the time to set up meetings with industry professionals and choose to work with people that “get” you. Planning goes much smoother when you don’t have to worry about explaining what your version of “rustic elegance” looks like. Know your overall concept and what will be important to you before hiring your team, then be open to input and insight from your vendors – they do it for a living! We really wanted to show why Ojai was important to us – it is where we met and attended high school. The invitations, the red barn and orange groves at the rehearsal dinner and reception were exactly what I imagined thanks to the creative direction of the talented people who made our wedding happen.

What It’s Like to Be a Ceci Bride:
For me, being a Ceci Bride was so much fun and one of my favorite parts of wedding planning. We knew what a great impact invitations can make leading up to an event and we wanted to ensure guests had the right information to make travel plans. Ceci perfectly helped us package the practical and the decorative for our wedding. Being from out of town, I found the design process easy via phone conversations and electronic proofs. I loved that Ceci got exactly what we wanted with the first drafts – it’s as if she read my mind!

Expert Style Tips

As you can see from the beautiful makeup Mar Romero and her crew at TEAM Hair & Makeup have done for Elizabeth’s wedding (in these gorgeous images shot by my friend Jose Villa), Mar knows a thing or two about making people look effortlessly beautiful. I asked her if she could share with us her top five everyday beauty tips that we could all try at home and she agreed to let us in on her secrets! I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely trying the braided bun for work. And even though it sounds crazy, I’m going to whip me up a batch of that avocado-and-beer hair remedy and give it a try ASAP! See below for more. Thanks, Mar, for sharing.

Mar Romero, Team Hair & Makeup

MAR ROMERO, TEAM HAIR & MAKEUP
Mar Romero, a fourth-generation Latina, was raised in San Diego, California, with dreams of becoming a makeup artist. She began her career in the mid 1990s, working as a national makeup artist for major cosmetic lines, including Bobbi Brown and Christian Dior. Mar quickly advanced into TV, independent films, commercials, and photo shoots. In the late 1990s, Mar was asked to do makeup for several Oscar nominees at the Academy Awards. Soon after, these high-profile celebrities began recommending Mar to friends and relatives for special events and weddings. It was then that Mar began to turn her focus towards the wedding industry. Using her artistic talent and creative vision, Mar launched TEAM Hair and Makeup in 1999. Mar has traveled to the Virgin Islands, Mexico, Bali, Italy, Hawaii, and Central and South America to style fashion shoots and weddings. Through perseverance and dedication, Mar has transformed herself into a master of her trade.

5 Hair & Makeup Tips by Mar Romero, Team Hair & Makeup

  1. Quick hairstyle: Want that I’m-not-even-trying hair? Dampen your hair with water and mousse, then braid your hair tightly into a ponytail and wrap it into a bun and pin. Take your blow dryer and dry your hair for three minutes on high heat, then unfold your bun and braid for some beachy waves without the fuss!
  2. Hair treatment: Dry ends? Here’s a natural way to get sleek, shiny hair! Grab two avocados, a can of beer (don’t drink it!) and an egg and mix them together. Once blended, massage the mixture into your hair and slip on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse and condition for a smooth, healthy-looking do!
  3. Moisturizer: Before applying foundation, always prep the skin with an oil-free moisturizer to ensure your skin glows naturally all day.
  4. Lips: To ensure your lipstick lasts all day, remove all gloss, chapstick or makeup and apply lipstick on a bare lip, then blot and reapply.
  5. Eyes: For a natural “smokey” look, toss out any dark shadows and replace them with a light shimmer shadow to sweep across your lid. Using a gel liner in black or black/brown, line the inside of your waterline and then smudge out with your finger for a natural, sultry eye without all the drama!

Recipes for Style

Olive-Oil Cake with Candied Orange

From Bon Appétit

Recipes for Style - Olive-Oil Cake with Candied Orange

Yield: Makes 12 servings

Active Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 5 hours

A mild or fruity olive oil works best in this cardamom-scented cake. Just try not to eat all of the candied orange slices before the cake cools.

Ingredients:

Candied orange and syrup
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup orange blossom honey
3 tablespoons green cardamom pods, crushed
1 small orange, thinly sliced

Cake
1/2 cup olive oil plus more for brushing
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup semolina flour (pasta flour)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sugar, divided
3 large eggs, separated
2/3 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
1 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chopped unsalted pistachios, lightly toasted

Special equipment:
9″-diameter springform pan

Ingredient Info:
Semolina flour (pasta flour) is available at better supermarkets and at Italian markets.

Directions – for candied orange and syrup:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Bring sugar, honey, cardamom, and 3 cups water to a boil in a medium heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  3. Add orange slices. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer, turning orange slices occasionally, until tender and syrup is reduced to 3 1/4 cups, about 40 minutes.
  4. Arrange orange slices in a single layer on prepared baking sheet; remove cardamom pods and seeds.
  5. Strain syrup.
  6. Do ahead: Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover syrup and orange slices separately; chill. Return orange slices to room temperature and rewarm syrup slightly before using.

Directions – for cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush pan with oil.
  2. Whisk both flours and next 4 ingredients in a medium bowl.
  3. Using an electric mixer, beat 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup oil in a large bowl for 1 minute.
  4. Beat in yolks, then flour mixture. Beat in yogurt, zest, and vanilla.
  5. Using clean, dry beaters, beat egg whites in another medium bowl until soft peaks form.
  6. Gradually beat in remaining 1/4 cup sugar until firm peaks form.
  7. Fold egg whites into batter just to blend in 2 additions.
  8. Transfer to prepared pan; smooth top.
  9. Bake cake until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 25 minutes.
  10. Pierce hot cake all over with a metal skewer.
  11. Slowly drizzle 3/4 cup warm syrup all over.
  12. When syrup is absorbed, slowly pour 3/4 cup more syrup over. Reserve remaining syrup for serving.
  13. Let cake cool in pan on a wire rack.
  14. Run a thin knife around edge of pan to release cake. Remove pan sides.
  15. Arrange candied orange slices over. Sprinkle pistachios over. Cut into wedges and serve drizzled with more syrup.

Luxe Elegance at the Four Seasons {A Real Wedding by Michelle Warren Photography}

Posted on March 26th, 2012 by Kate. Filed under Real Weddings.

For Frank and Marbella, their stunning, coral and gold wedding was like a dream come true.  We’ll say, for us too!  We’re sooo in love with their album.  It’s easy to tell that every detail was perfectly planned and executed by Liz at Central Coast Memory Makers…from the vibrant palette to the cocktail reception overlooking the ocean.  Many thanks to the talented Michelle Warren for sharing these amazing photos with us! The day started with pampered beauty in the bridal suite by TEAM Hair & Makeup.  Marbella’s best gals helped her into the exquisite Amalia Carrara gown, which was fit for a princess.  The bridal party lit up the photos in coral colored statement dresses with pleated ruffle hemlines. It was an unforgettable ceremony at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito, followed by a cocktail reception overlooking the beach on the terrace of La Pacifica Ballroom at The Four Seasons Resort in Santa Barbara.  The reception was the picture of luxury and elegance, indoors at The Four Seasons.  Camilla Svensson Burns designed the most incredible florals- the room was decked out in pale pink and gold tones.   Read the bride’s story just below and catch the full feature in our Real Weddings Gallery!

From the Bride: They say if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plan. We were introduced by mutual friends. A month prior on Frank’s 39th Birthday celebration, he announced that he would never get married, it simply wasn’t for him. I was too busy trying to finish my MBA degree and wasn’t interested in finding love just yet. Upon introduction, Frank claims he fell in love instantly and swore to himself that if he didn’t marry me, he would never marry anyone. I inevitably fell in love with Frank’s romantic style, AMAZING personality, and wonderful sense of humor – anyone who knows Frank knows there is never a dull moment!

One week before our Wedding, the weather in Montecito was gloomy and cloudy. However the day of our wedding, we couldn’t have been blessed with better weather, it was beautiful, and sunny!  The day started off with the hair and make-up team arriving to do all the ladies hair in the Bridal Suite. I didn’t worry about a single thing; Liz (our wedding coordinator) took care of absolutely everything!

The ceremony took place at the most beautiful little church in Montecito. I was walked down the aisle by my 94 year old grandfather, with a small picture of my Father in the bouquet. The Mariachi Band played the traditional Mexican wedding music. It was a beautiful ceremony by Father Edward Jalbert.  When it was time for us to kiss, Frank took my face in his hands and our foreheads met for what ended up being a brief, yet unforgettable moment full of emotion. The day was truly a dream come true for us both.

The reception was absolutely stunning. The cocktail reception was held overlooking the ocean on the terrace of  La Pacifica Ballroom at The Four Seasons Resort, The Biltmore.  It is months later and we are still overwhelmed with comments of that beautiful cocktail reception. Traditional music was played by the Mariachi, a Trio, and then to get the party started, the wonderful “Impulse” Band played. The dance floor was never empty! We danced our first dance to “At Last.”  Frank forgot everything we had rehearsed for our first dance, except for the beginning and the end, so we just improvised!  It turned out to be a beautiful dance.

The best man’s speech was so well presented by Frank’s brother, Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado. The maid of honor’s speech by my twin sister made everyone laugh and then cry right after, starting off with “Hey, that’s not fair, he does this for a living” and ending with the following words addressed to Frank: “Frank, I can’t ask you to treat her well because that’s all you’ve ever done. I can’t ask you to take care of her because I know that you will. I can’t ask you to love her any more because I’m pretty sure that’s impossible. The one thing I ask is for all of that to never change.”

After that heartfelt speech, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The rest of the night was full of fun with the photobooth and all the dancing, starting with the song “Tonight’s gonna be a good night”- the song people would catch Frank singing whenever he was going to take me out in the months we were dating.
